Cansen Ercan

Harmonious compositions of plastic elements such as colors, forms, texture, and light are at the forefront of Cansen Ercan’s paintings. The artist prefers to form a relationship with the viewer over these elements and formal problems rather than a latent story. Her production of paysage and portraits on canvases feature a color palette where gray tones are predominant. Emerging from the artist’s observations, paintings are displayed with a pure pictorial expression far from their subject.

Born in Kars in 1958, Cansen Ercan graduated from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the Middle East Technical University in 1982, and from the Department of Painting of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Neşet Günal-Neş'e Erdok workshop in 1987, getting her second undergraduate degree before finishing Painting Department Master's Program of the same university in 2010. She opened her first solo exhibition at the Urart Art Gallery in 1989. Ercan's first art book was published by Harmony Art Gallery, where she worked between 1997 and 2010. The artist started working with Evin Art Gallery in 2012 and received the Sedat Simavi Visual Arts Award with her solo exhibition in 2014. During her artistic career, she opened over thirty solo exhibitions and displayed them in many group exhibitions. Ercan continues her practice in her atelier in Izmir.
