Ilgaz Gürün

Ilgaz Gürün focuses in her work on moments that often go unnoticed within the routine flow of everyday life. Drawing on her personal observations and archive, she aims to create encounters that evoke empathy and recall familiar experiences of the human condition. Through unconventional framing and the use of dramatic light, she constructs an uncanny atmosphere, while her ironic approach reveals the absurdities of daily life that have gradually become normalized. The figures in Gürün’s works, often aware of being watched, disrupt the viewer’s role as a passive observer and invite a reconsideration of the relationship between artwork and viewer by breaking the fourth wall that separates the work from reality.
Born in Kocaeli in 1998, Gürün graduated from the Painting Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2022. She completed her MFA in the Painting Programme at the same university in 2025. Her first solo exhibition, titled On Being, was held at EVİN in 2025. Gürün was also among the participants of BASE’25 and the winners of the Hitay Foundation Art Competition 2025. She continues her practice in her studio in Istanbul.
